Architecture of an Infinity Cove: A Guide to Permanent Studio Installation

In professional broadcasting and high-end film production, the “Infinity Cove” is the gold standard. It is a permanent studio structure designed to create an “infinite” background, where the walls, floor, and ceiling appear to merge into a single, seamless plane.

When built correctly, a cyclorama allows for wide-angle shots, complex camera movements, and flawless VFX integration. However, the architecture of a cove is more complex than simply painting a wall green. It requires precise geometry and the right technical materials.

Here is our professional guide to the architecture and installation of a permanent chroma key cyclorama.

1. The Skeleton: Framing and the “Radius”

The defining feature of an infinity cove is the cove radius—the curve where the wall meets the floor. This curve is what eliminates the corner shadows that would otherwise “break” the digital key.

  • The Framework: Most permanent coves are built using a timber or metal “rib” system. These ribs are cut to a specific radius (typically between 600mm and 900mm) to ensure a smooth transition.

  • The Surface: The ribs are usually skinned with flexible plywood or MDF. This creates the structural “shell” of the studio.

2. Choosing the Substrate: Fabric vs. Paint

While many studios choose to paint their coves, professional high-traffic studios are increasingly moving toward fabric-wrapped installations using full rolls of Digifoam or Loop Nylon.

Why Fabric Outperforms Paint:
  • Consistency: Paint can fade, scuff, and vary between batches. Our Chroma Key fabrics are dye-lot guaranteed for 100% color consistency across the entire installation.

  • Acoustics: A painted hard wall reflects sound, creating a “boxy” audio environment. A Digifoam wrap provides immediate acoustic dampening.

  • Maintenance: If a painted wall is scuffed by a prop, the whole section must be repainted and dried. If a fabric section is damaged, it can often be cleaned or locally replaced much faster.

3. The Installation Process: Achieving the Seamless Look

When installing fabric on a permanent cove, the goal is total tension.

Step 1: Horizontal vs. Vertical Mounting

For large-scale coves, we recommend mounting our full fabric rolls horizontally. This allows for a single, continuous run of fabric across the entire “sweet spot” of the camera’s field of view, minimising horizontal seams.

Step 2: The “invisible” Seam

When joining two rolls of fabric, professional installers use a “butt-joint” technique. Because our Loop Nylon and Digifoam have a high-density pile, the fibers can be brushed together at the seam, making it virtually invisible to the camera sensor.

Step 3: Tensioning and Adhesion

To prevent sagging, the fabric is traditionally tensioned over the frame and secured at the edges. For permanent installs, many studios use a “track” system (similar to acoustic wall systems) or high-strength industrial spray adhesives designed for foam-backed textiles.

4. Lighting the Architecture

The geometry of the cove is designed to work with light. To achieve the “infinity” effect, you must light the cove independently of the talent.

  • Cyc Lights: These should be placed at the top of the wall and, if possible, in a “ground row” hidden behind a small lip on the floor.

  • The Goal: You want the light to “wash” the curve evenly. The radius of the cove is specifically designed to prevent light from pooling in the corners, which is why the structural integrity of that curve is so vital.

5. Protecting Your Investment

A permanent cove is a working environment. To ensure longevity:

  • Shoe Protection: Always insist that talent and crew wear “blueies” (shoe covers) or clean socks when walking on the cove.

  • Floor Protection: For heavy props or vehicles, use “Poly-Wall” or clear acrylic sheets over the fabric to distribute the weight without crushing the Digifoam core.
